Reinstall, phew that is a murder, you can always go that route but where
is the fun in that.

What happens when you run startx? You have to install xinit to have it
btw. Run startx as root and  your user. Install slim or xdm and see if
you have the same issue. I have found a combination of factors like
.xsession/.xinitrc and different display managers make a difference.
apt-get purge xserver-xorg then reinstall it before you go scrapping the
whole install.

Why does your system see two GPU's? When you ran apt-get dist-upgrade
did you choose to install the latest udev or not?
