It will be futile to suggest another distro when the person concerned doesn't even know how to use the liveCD of the main distro where the ones you suggested were based on.
uvishere, we wont be able to help you out unless you can provide details on what you did first, what you did next, until you encountered the problem. I say, it's a hard drive problem. I've been using Ubuntu's liveCDs from various releases, and even resized hard drives with existing OSes in them using gparted from the liveCD without any problem nor encountered any hard drive issue so far.
