I couldnt have said it better :). It boils down to personal preference. Depending on my mood of the week (or month), I'd switch interfaces. Right now I'm on Gnome-Shell. Been through GNOME, KDE, XFCE, fluxbox, name-your-interface-here. And spare me the "Gnome Shell is crap" litany because I will have none of it. It's _my_ PC, _my_ installation and _my_ preference.
As Jerry said, it's all about personal taste. Your PC, your installation, your preference. Take other people's interface suggestions and preference with a grain of salt.
