For me, it's been pretty hardware dependent. The current version of KDE is
pretty demanding on the graphics system if you use all the bells and whistles,
and if the graphics driver has some problems (cough *radeon* cough) it can end
up being slow and jumpy. I am pretty hard on my laptops, and replace one about
every six months. I treat them as commodities and don't pay a lot of attention
about which graphics card, etc. is installed -- I buy the cheapest
upper-mid-range consumer box that I can get, usually by going to the local
Staples/Office Depot/box store and offering to buy their demo box of the most
recently discontinued model at a discount.

What I've found is that Gnome seems to muddle along better when the graphics
driver isn't really tuned, and KDE is more fun when it is.

I couldnt have said it better :).
It boils down to personal preference. Depending on my mood of the week (or
month), I'd switch interfaces. Right now I'm on Gnome-Shell. Been
through GNOME, KDE, XFCE, fluxbox, name-your-interface-here. And spare me the "Gnome
Shell is crap" litany because I will have none of it.
It's _my_ PC, _my_ installation and _my_ preference.

As Jerry said, it's all about personal taste. Your PC, your installation, your
preference. Take other people's interface suggestions and
preference with a grain of salt. It might work for them, but might not work for
you. :)

Ahh the never ending KDE vs Gnome debate. I have a better suggestion, try
each out yourself and make up your own mind. It's
amazing how well you can make decisions for yourself without depending on
stirring up huge debates about what is best. Best for
you is not best for me.

      BTW, KDE rules.
