Actually, I was just reminded of [1], which might be related to (or the same) bug that you're experiencing. Do any of the ExpressKeys aside from the center round button perform an action -- especially right-click -- prior to disabling/enabling the pad? According to the fifth comment in the linked bug, it sounds like the issue is somewhat dependent on the order, which (if it is indeed the same bug) might explain why disabling and enabling the pad can work around it.
