You're right, if I plug it in before X starts it is detected, opened, and all
the things you expect from it works like it should. Once I got my
configuration right it hasn't failed me once under these conditions.

It's just that I don't always have it plugged in when I boot my machine. I
have a laptop and a tendency to move it around a bit and on some places there
just ain't enough room for the tablet...

Yes, I saw that at the time of my original post, and that fix will work for
those who know what to do when they (accidently) pull it out. Mm.. Maybe only
for some.. My config accepted the tablet only through /dev/input/mice if it
was not connected when X started and no VT switching could remedy that.
Restarting X did the thing though, but the kernel oops'ed and crashed the
usb-subsystem (I think) when I pulled it out.. I'll have a deeper look into
this later and make another post with more details if it's not a fault of my
own.

Anyway, I think switching VT's to get it working again is fine for us who
knows that trick (the fact that this could help after unplug/plug took me
some time to find), but for the average user? I don't know... I do know that
I'm usually far too lazy to read the documentation and would probably miss a
2-line comment with a tip like this.

I'm hoping for a comment from Ping when he gets back or from the others
on the project (or any of the other on the list). If only explaining why it's
not such a good idea.

Btw I managed to get on the list now... So CC:ing me is not needed anymore..

Cheers
