Sounds like a good idea. I've tried quite a few combinations to see if I could
get hotplug to work and the result was downright depressing. The only way I
could unplug/plug it while X was running was when X did not have the event*
device open. Everything else generated a kernel oops. Please tell me that
it's my machine that's the problem.. Someone?

The software I've tested with so far:
$ dpkg -l xserver-xorg
ii  xserver-xorg      6.9.0.dfsg.1-6    the X.Org X server

wacom_drv.so: linuxwacom-0.7.4-2
wacom.ko: linux-2.6.16.4 (standard) (linuxwacom-0.7.4-2 behaves the
         same except that no events are generated for pen at all)
hid-core.ko: linux-2.6.16.4 (standard) (linuxwacom-0.7.4-2 has only
         some additional tablets (not Volito2-related) on its black-list)

I found my answer in this post:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=9535089&forum_id=19621

The problem I have at the moment is that I *can't* make it work as far as I
understand it.. So.. I'm sorry, I can't write something I can claim is
working... :(

Cheers
 Magnus
