When the highway department was contemplating a new diamond lane on one
of the freeways down in LA some years back, they knew and calculated a
rise in deaths on the road as a direct result of compressing high speed
traffic in the initial phases. They were right. For efficiency and
progress, and because they of course could not be held personally or
directly accountable, they continued the march.

Whether it's Cal-Trans or the Pentagon, there must be some awareness of
collateral damage. The software agencies know it; they realize they
lose customers by no longer supporting the 386 standard or Wordstar
1.00. But they calculate they gain more from innovation than they lose
by adhering to defunct standards.

The question is, how many? And for what? To provide color and fonts to
the advanced user, how many Luddites would you be willing to lose? Five
out of every hundred? Ten? What price are you willing to pay for
progress?

I'm just ticked off because I can't get Netscape to load on my trusty
old LC II.
