It's a sendmail-ism that sometimes works, sort of.

The right thing to do, of course, is to ensure that the envelope MAIL FROM
address points to some place that can deal with the bounces.  Traditionally
it's a human who tries to read the bounce messages, these days it's often a
robot.  Particularly if your mail program uses per-receipient envelopes, 
robot bounce handling can be very effective.
