The "Kill me" voice was the result of a flashback that he suffered. It appears that when he was much younger, he was stranded on a shuttle adrift in space and that someone onboard the shuttle asked him to kill them (presumeably because they'd given up hope of being rescued). The flashback appears to be what triggers his decision to attempt to save the colony block. He's been in that situation before, and he can't allow others to have to go through it as well.
There IS a voice change when he touches minds with Soma. But it's not the "Kill me" voice. The flashback appears to be what brings him back to his senses and suppresses his more ruthless side/personality.
