Unfortunately, Core's e-mail is still generating "Lycos is unstable, we're working to fix this blah blah blah" messages from Lycos, so my apologies if my comments miss something obvious in his e-mail.
Sending Kyrios instead of Virtue makes more sense, imo. Kyrios is a high-speed unit that should be capable of matching any new mobile suits that the Earth nations create. Virtue, on the other hand, is a big heavy unit that's built for taking fire and punching through armor with a really big gun. It looks like it's designed to go after big, heavily armored targets and not necessarily mobile suits (though it demonstrates in the first episode that it can do that). So the optimal choices were to send either Kyrios or Exia.
Re - the order to recover Soma
It's been a couple of days, so I don't remember the episode as well as I might. But iirc Sergei and Soma were alone in space during the test. I don't remember seeing any new mobile suits even after Sergei had restrained Soma. So most likely, Sergei's orders were to a group that would be leaving the station to recover the now disfunctional Soma. Such a group would not be able to reach the floating blocks until after the rescue team (which would have been dispatched the moment that the incident occurred) had finally arrived. I'll need to rewatch the episode to confirm that, however.
Soma will no doubt stay on Sergei's squad, but she'll first get a complete psychological evaluation and profiling to make sure that she's not hallucinating. Given that she's what she is, the scientists who tinkered with her might be more willing to believe her if she starts claiming that someone made mental contact with her. I expect it'll be at least a couple of episodes before we see her back in the cockpit, however. It's also possible that the incident might provide the HRL with some clues to Allelujah's identity, but at this point that's merely wild speculation.
As for thinking about the episode too much...
Didn't you start us down this path to begin with by thinking about the physics involved?
:P
Truth be told, at this point other than Allelujah's late arrival (which does have a semi-plausible explanation) and the fact that Saji and his girlfriend fell straight down instead of floating slightly outward I think this episode is actually fine.
