Hey Core, I got my boys a PS3 for Christmas and it plays DIVX and XVID files off the HD (either the local one or via USB perfectly). Unfortunately, it does not recognize MKV files which most subbers are using now. For the MKV files, I convert them using a tool called PSP Video 9, which does an OK job creating MP4 file which the PS3 does recognize. However, this will only work for hard coded subs. I had tools to strip out extra sub files from MKV files but at a certain point, it just became too much work.
Sony announced this week that they will allow BluRay movies to be recoded by the PS3 and stored for mobile viewing on the PSP. Bandai has already announced Char's Counterattack, F91 and 00 will be released on BluRay. If you are like me and travel alot, that might be an interesting option.
