Just wanted to get a discussion going regarding a meeting in December. Some might think being so close to Christmas and the holidays why bother. I would be inclined to agree if it weren't for one undeniable fact I just can't let go.
Now I could be mistaken, but best I can tell this is the first year in many years the JaxLUG has had a meeting every month so far this year. I would be a shame to blow it in the final hour. Not to mention would be good momentum, and raise the bar for future years. Anyway after last meeting, I was thinking we might do something like a desktop show and tell. Have various members display their desktop env for a little and talk about it, let others ask questions etc. 5-10 minutes or so each, give or take. Just a show and tell kinda thing. At times we have done some screenshots and stuff on list, and videos are even better. But nothing can beat a hands on demo, and ability to inquire further about things you might like to see on your desktop. After all its about customization, you can take bits and pieces and make your own recipe/LAF. Not sure if we want to consider extending it beyond Linux/Unix, to also include Apple. I know its a Unix, but I don't consider it like the others. Windows might be pushing it, but might be worth going over the interface as well. Pretty sure neither can be customized like Linux/Unix, with the various window managers, desktops envs etc. Not sure if anyones running Enlightenment these days, but they were always trying to push the cutting edge of GUI on the desktop. Their control panel for E17, was what we expect on a GUI after watching some of the movies. Though of course, movies always have these killer interfaces you never see. Because they are usually not even functional, just eye candy :) Looks like Enlightenment might be coming to a refrigerator near you or in your home.... http://www.enlightenment.org/p.php?p=news/show&l=en&news_id=26 Seems you can combine compiz and e17 for the ultimate experience ;) http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=e17 Can't seem to find one with the control panel I recall, likely wrong terminology. It was animated, and if you have seen it you know what I am talking about. Very few GUIs short of ones for games are animated. -- William L.
