Maybe if you're using an Exact palette, but for graphics with few colours where I use an Adaptive palette for smaller file sizes, I don't find any difference between GIF and 8-bit PNG (at least using Fireworks anyway).

No. Use a PNG with indexed colours ALWAYS in preference to a GIF.

(I've never seen a case in which an indexed PNG was larger than its
GIF counterpart.)
