I have an Adler Barbour Cold Machine that I installed in 1980 and it has not
missed a beat since then. My box is very large (a Gulfstar 41 "B" model) and
poorly insulated on top; the unit runs about 25% of the time (Maine waters).
When the thermostat knob broke after 20 years, Adler Barbour replaced it free.
I'm sure that the newer systems are more efficient and that performance would
increase with a better insulated box. But you certainly can't beat the
reliability I have experienced.
