It is relatively simple to loosen the coupler bolts and check the spacing all
around with feeler gauges. Next turn shaft 90 degrees at a time and repeat,
this shows any crooked shaft or coupler. When done, if possible, check for up
and down motion while turning and using a dial indicator. Adjusting the motor
mounts very small amounts gives you a lot of .001s, turn nuts 1/6 of a turn at
a time, or slide engine slightly sideways. Also, check to see if the shaft is
centered in the exit hole. If it is off, adjust in the needed direction to
take up what is needed from the feeler gauges by choosing to adjust the front
or back mounts.
Hopefully the nuts will not be frozen, you may need long socket extensions
and/or a short wrench for the adjusting nuts. The nuts are usually US size,
most popular is 15/16". I bought a 15/16" wrench from a cheap store and cut it
in half.

I've got some whine running under power and the more throttle the louder the
whine. It's getting annoying. Doesn't happen in reverse or neutral. I've talked
to the transmission/power people (Mack Boring) and they said either the
transmission or the cutlass bearing. Suggested taking the coupling apart and
re-alignment. The "dripless" shaft seal folks said that the seal could whine
if out of water, it's not. So, to align the shaft, how does one take into
consideration the shaft load from the prop? There's not much movement, but
there's gonna be some. Is a static alignment close enough? I understand it's
+/- .003 ? It appears to be coming from the cutlass bearing, I likely can't
tell until I pull the coupling apart. Any ideas, suggestions, wisdom, etc. The
cutlass bearing has been in the boat about 4 years and has less than 100 hours
on it under power. I do have a hefty three blade prop pushing the boat. It's a
40' Hunter. Thanks in advance
