For ~$20 you can get a stethoscope - like :

that will help pinpoint the sound - might save you some time....

Yes you can make one, but this and others ~$20 have a diaphragm inside 
that amplifies the sound.

If a rear motor mount has come loose, the extra weight on stuff 
(transmission, bearing, coupler) can cause a whine.
