I agree that the hydraulic system is very undesirable due to lack of feel, although it may be easier to install. Likely the costs won't be much different, I don't know about that. Check Defender or Hamilton's for hydraulics and Edison for cable. The hydraulic system goes with a hydraulic autohelm pretty simple. And if you have a pilot house you can have multiple helm stations. But you still get no "feel" of the helm.

I'd go to wheel and cable steering with a pedestal. Then you could use an under-deck autopilot with either hydraulic or mechanical ram. Hydraulic is quieter. If you install two separate tiller arms on your rudder post, you would have backup steering. ? You can do the install yourself - at least the cable steering. ? Ron Rogers ----- Original Message ----- From: Doc Turner Hi All, ? I've been lurking here for a while and I noticed that you people are a pretty knowledgeabale bunch of sailors.? My question is:? How hard is it to install hydraulic steering?? I've got a Cascade 36 with a tiller and I'm getting tired of hand steering all the time.? Both of our tiller autopilots have given up the ghost and I'm ready to have more room in the cockpit.? So, what's involved?? How much can I expect to pay?? At this point, I'm just wondering. _______________________________________________ Liveaboard mailing list Liveaboard@liveaboardnow.org To adjust your membership settings over the web http://www.liveaboardnow.org/mailman/listinfo/liveaboard To subscribe send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The archives are at http://www.liveaboardnow.org/pipermail/liveaboard/ To search the archives http://www.mail-archive.com/liveaboard@liveaboardnow.org The Mailman Users Guide can be found here http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/mailman-member/index.html ________________________________________________________________________ More new features than ever.
