Ennie, my Shipperke dog, had several types of barks. There was a bark for alerting on someone he knew and approved of, and a much louder, shriller bark for alerting on strangers, among others.
He could tell an approach in pitch black from a hundred feet and further even if under oars, and even if you drifted in with the current he could tell from a remarkable distance you were approaching and if you were a stranger or not by smell alone. (He once scent tracked me into and through the aisles of our locale Wal-Mart). If he alerted Danger! in the middle of the night I looked out the one inch thick lexan washboard. Strangers would then have to approach knowing I knew they are coming but not knowing if I was armed and ready to defend. Still not ideal by any means but a bit better than the scenario you outline BTW his judgment of character was superb. He knew in the first two minutes the loopy women we had as a landlady in Baltimore was nuts. But I was not as discerning at first as he was. Dogs really can pick up on something, the "Dog Whisperer calls it "Energy".-Ken _______________________________________________ Liveaboard mailing list [email protected] To adjust your membership settings over the web http://www.liveaboardnow.org/mailman/listinfo/liveaboard To subscribe send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The archives are at http://www.liveaboardnow.org/pipermail/liveaboard/ To search the archives http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected] The Mailman Users Guide can be found here http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/mailman-member/index.html
