Its a good thing, Norm, that so many years ago I had not met a jaded, sourpuss like you... If you hate florida so much,by all means leave and if living aboard is so tiresome. By all means move to land.. but please take it to some sleazy 3rd world country where your rights don't exist and not one gives a rats ass what country your passport says you are a citizen in..because when you get arrested for simply crossing the street there is no miranda... and you must pay for your room and board... where when you get robbed, no one cares.. after all you are just another rich americano..
to reply... You should be aware that the liveaboard lifestyle is under constant attack. Many Florida municipalities, and I have heard the State itself too, actually outlaw living aboard a boat, as does Georgia. We are considered to be bums and tramps, akin to Gypsies, and there are laws against our very existence. Some weeks ago my nearest neighbor ashore stated that he hated me because: I didn't pay property taxes (he pays $25K/year for his multi-million dollar house), I poop in the river (I have a composting toilet) and I am anchored in his sight. Every consider your nearest neighbor might be jealous... though he would deny it to the death. You might try educating him... how many times have we boaters been asked...''do you have bathroom aboard, where do you sleep, how to you cook'... my last boat.. I would describe in land terms as a 2 br, 2 bath floating condo with a gourmet kitchen. Suddenly it went from a boat to 'exotic' and almost a thing of envy. Counter the whole poop thing by asking this man if he knows what his poop does once he flushes the toilet.. he might be surprised at how many municipalties run raw sewage offshore 3 miles and dump it there.. I generally use those times when someone says such stuff for education, in a polite way.. when they say I am 'ruining' thier view.. I remind them they are ruining mine... I don't get to see a pristine tree lined anchorage..I get condos where billy bob and his GF are having 'fun' on the balcony not realizing us boaters have a clear view.. ewwwwwwwwwww..... or the guy who peed off his condo balcony into the water below at 2am.. again... ewwwwwwwwwwwww I am considering taking my pension and SS checks and moving to another country to live out my retirement. Suggestions anyone? Yes, Afghanistan... they love americans there... so does Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicarauga, ... apparently you have not done your research... and want us to do it for you... look at a lot more than the temp, the sailing.. look at what you cannot do or own in central america/south america look at the EU and see all the restrictions there... come on... no place is perfect.. and some a LOT less than others.. How about a freind of mine who reported about a murder on the Rio /Dulce a month or two back and was pointedly told to shut up or be forced to leave his hurricane sanctuary by other Americans who run business' there.. I could spend days telling you truly horrific stories about a lot of other places.. Or I could find a marina in this country somewhere and tie the boat up even though the boat is self-sufficient at anchor. Rent and utilities would cost me about half my retirement stipend. It is far more acceptable to the bosses for someone who lives aboard to do this. It is a lifestyle more similar the lives of the politicians and cops and more to the point; part of one's rent money finds its way into their pockets. I am in a small marina in Baltimore... $7/foot I am 33 feet long and pay $231/month plus utilities.. the heater costs me about $100/month.. the a/c runs me half that.. in sept. the local utility always does rebates back to the customers.. right now I have a $192 credit on my bill.. when my slip in st pete comes open with my local discount and liveaboard fees its still about $600/mlnth.. that is a bargain these days.. it is also a reason NOT to have those huge 40ft plus boats if you cannot afford one... Excuse me... so basically what you are saying is that... your major bitch is that you live aboard because you cannot afford to live on land. "Local cities and counties in Florida have been prohibited by statute 327.60(2) from regulating the anchoring of non live-aboard vessels even though many of them have been doing so for years." (from the recent posting) a classic example of a half truth.... some of those cities.. stuart, fort myers and marathon to name three..have had the legislature deed them the land that the mooring fields sit on .... therefore they are not illegally regulating anchoring... Marco Island and Stuart (outside its mooring field) attempted to do so... both were shot down upon trial. Notice that this prohibition only applies to "NON-LIVEABOARD" vessels. Locals are free to outlaw anyone who actually lives aboard his vessel. If you own a residence somewhere you are a "full time cruiser" instead of a "liveaboard". This is why cops often ask if you have a home on land. The proper answer is always "yes". Keep in mind that it is crime to lie to a cop, whether you are under oath or not. (However, is is perfectly legal for a cop to lie to a citizen and they often do.) oh flaming bullshit!!! (she says rolling her eyes in disgust)... I never ever lie to the cops...and I do have a land address via St Brendan's Isle... and a legal florida drivers license.. I am a cruiser... and I never say liveaboard.. never have.. I do NOT own property in florida or anywhere else.. i am not sure where you get this 'truth'... You are not required to answer thier questions.. and I don't.. just don't say anything.. its none of thier business.. Notice further that our being declared to be criminals has entirely to do with owning property ashore or tying up in a marina. The crux of the matter lies in money, which relates to the greed for power. Paying property taxes on a residence ashore is the primary source of the money in the politician's and the cop's wallet. If money flows freely from your pocket to the politician's and cop's pocket, you are a good citizen, if not, you are a criminal. Your perception NOT the truth.. sure you aren't a lawyer, you seem pretty good at twisting things... only half true again... florida derives a goodly amount of it's income from state sales tax.. The implication in the last sentence is that they are all 'on the take'...you can twist it however you want Norm... boy you sure are bitter... others had the same perception of your comment... I hope you noticed the message posted on this List about the pending major attack on us by the FWC water cops. I hope you responded and made your viewpoint known to the address provided. Yes I did, I was the one who posted it... and I hope you took the time to write a coherent response and to call whatever senator that represents you in the florida legislature or did you just sit in your cockpit and whine? It has not even been introduced as a bill yet.. it is simply a figment of some lunatics imagination ... it is, in truth, a way for them to get around the recent court rullings against them.. Fact of the matter.. federal law will still prevail and there are those of us who will have NO problem challenging it again and again.. American society is two-faced. The independent, self-sufficient ,lifestyle is often respected and admired in literature as the strength of the Pioneers who built this Country, but in actual fact we are vilified, considered to be degenerate reprobates and laws are enacted to destroy us, a process going on as we speak. I hope, I never get as unhappy and bitter as you norm... I am the mom of a soldier who is currently deployed... every day I am reminded of why we have this country and why it is such a great place to live... I grew up a military brat... I have seen 3rd world country's and their lifestyles, and government... you appear to have NO appreciation of what a great place this is.. in spite of its warts, and there are many.. one sits in the white house and two more want to live there.. (joke, laugh)... it is still the best thing going...if it were not why the heck does everyone else turn to us for help, support and protection... If you are considering living aboard a boat you must consider these facts. The facts accoring to Norm.............. These are the man-made conditions the liveaboard has to contend with, and they are by far the most danger we face, far worse than any weather, mechanical breakage, or navigation demands. Our own country, which we spent our lives helping to build and supporting in many ways, has turned against us and has hired men with guns to destroy us. and you would roll over stick your butt in the air and hand them a jar of vaseline... or run like a coward... I am not a coward and I WILL fight back... i have rights garunteed me by men who took the time to sign a declaration... every look up what happened to many of them Norm.. men who had balls to fight back.. my son fights for me and I will fight for my granchildren to have the same boating rights I have now... run if you want... but I am going home to florida in a few months.. and i am taking my home with me.. all 33 feet of her.. and I dare anyone to violate MY rights... BTW, don't let the screen door slap you in the ass on the way out the door there buckwheat...
