I have read at least one insurance report of a boatload of guys
a little ways offshore who were saved when a fire started in their
engine room and one of the guys had the presence of mind to
immediately push the red DISTRESS button on their VHF on
the way to fighting the fire.
In their case within a couple minutes the fire was out of control
and no one would have been able to get back to the radio to
send out a Mayday. But the radio had already done it for them.
If you have registered your vessel and programed in your MMSI
number your VHF will transmit your ID and location to other
vessels within range and it could save a life. As fires can get
out of control quickly, I was impressed with the wisdom of using
all tools at our disposal.
