The simplicity of plain text produces shorter messages, but HTML allows for more complex messages that often get the idea across better, as illustrated by Eric's HTML message asking us to use Plain Text.
Attachments are very useful to send diagrams and photos to illustrate technical discussions. Perhaps the List software could be made to convert HTML messages to Plain Text messages to be sent to those folks who desire Plain Text..
