Wally, Thank you so much for addressing the anchoring issue in Melbourne as effectively as you did. It is just that kind of hands-on, face-to-face effort that let the bosses know there are real people out here that care and may actually fight to do something about it.
I had an on-going email conversation with two people in Melbourne, a policeman and a lady with the city hall, which I compiled and published on the List. The crux was that they wiggled and pranced but would not vary from the 72 hour max stay for "liveaboards". Not enforcing their anti-livaboard is a step forward, but as for me as long as they have this ordinance on their books they are still bad people just as if they have made a law against any other sort of people, prohibiting them from being in their city. That just not supposed to happen in this country. The Eau Gallie anchorage is where the Canadian cruiser was told by one cop that no anchor light was needed, and subsequently issued a citation by another cop for not displaying an anchor light.' I have had several conversations with the mayor, Harry Goode, chief of police and solicitors for Melbourne over their anchor law - which, after an article of mine in Southwinds about a year ago June showing that they violated the state anchor law, was no longer enforced. In fact, friends of mine at anchor there last January were told by a cop that the anchoring law was no longer enforced and they were welcome to remain in the Eau Gallie anchorage. The former water cop there, Randy, has moved on - Randy was a decent guy, didn't hassle boaters - no idea about the new fellow - I've missed the story about the anchoring light business, but if someone wants to send it to me offlist, I'll pursue this when I get down there in December. I kinda like yanking Harry's chain when I get a chance - he was quite rude to me the first time I spoke with him, even though I told him I was a journalist when I asked him about their anchoring ordinance. The next time we chatted, after his foolishness, and the illegality of the city's ordinance - not to mention the stupidity of the city's solicitor handling the issue - was published, he was quite a bit more charming.
