Steve:
I used a Devil's Claw, AKA chain hook, shackled to an eyes splice in a
length appropriately sized three strand nylon. After the anchor was set
I attached the chain hook and let about ten or fifteen feet depending on
the depth of the water and let out enough chain to have a loop of chain
hanging in the water. The nylon acted as a snubber and it was easy to
bring the chain aboard and remove the Devil's Claw before it got to the
windless.

I usually anchored with a bridle, had a tri, and the Claw made
attachment easy. Claw lasted a year or two of daily use before rusting
out. Get 'em cheap at work boat supply houses along the waterway, St
Augustine's Marine Oil and Supply was a good source.
