Ya should have emailed me! I had two spare masthead thingies (courtesy of SH!)
plus the cabling and junction box. I got rid of them on eBay this past spring
when commissioning the new boat since the new one is all Raymarine.

For what I got for them on eBay I would have given them to you had I known you
needed it!

My issue was an aneometer.. that spelled right... a hurricane removed the top
wind thingy from the mast. I called SH trying to figure out a way to replace
it..or a source to purchase an aftermarket one that would keep my older one
working. I was told in no uncertain terms that the product was no longer
available and that even if it was, they were not interested in servicing it and
so on.. To replace was around $500 or something. This was back in 2003. From
that point on I refused to have any of thier products aboard, the same with
Raymarine.
OTOH... Raritan was simply awesome in helping me figure out the year my old
electric head model was. That guy must have spent an hour with me on the
phone.. Same with guy at Pacific Seacraft. He had worked at the old Ericson
factory.
As much as I dislike Garmin for its proprietary software. Thier customer
service rocks.

I'm surprised you had issues with Standard Horizon, 'bella. My experience
has been that they have the best customer service in the business. There's a
guy out there, Tim Johnson, who has been way more than helpful with any SH
issues I've ever had. Hydro-Therapy, my old boat, had all SH instruments and I
had a bunch of issues with their AWI. Tim kept sending me different parts
(usually the masthead transducer) until we got the instrument working
correctly. Never a charge.

Recently, with Captiva, I removed the PO's VHF with an older RAM (no
Lat/Lon readings for the DSC) and installed my old original VHF radio and RAM
mike off of Hydro-Therapy. When I ran a radio check the base station came
through 5x5 but there was a loud hum emanating from the RAM when I transmitted
on it. I spoke to Tim and he suggested it could be the cable between the base
down below and the RAM plug at the pedestal (interference from the engine or
something) OR the mike could have gone south on me. He said send it in and
they'd take a look at it.

Long story short, I called them two weeks after I shipped them the mike and
Tim said it was a problem with the mike itself (one of the electronic
components), they repaired it, and it had already been shipped back to me.
When I asked how they could do that since I hadn't given them a credit card, he
said to not worry about it. They "like to take care" of their customers! And
this was an 8 yr old RAM mike!!!!

It seemed so unusual for a vendor - especially a marine vendor!! - to have
that level customer service that I wrote a laudatory email to Practical Sailor
for their "Where Credit is Due" section. I haven't a clue whether it'll get
published but I felt better for having written it.

Raymarine? Now THERE I agree with you wholeheartedly !! Captiva came with
all Raymarine instruments and I had bunches of issues and questions about
upgrades, etc., and had numerous occasions to call for help. Once you get past
the phone gatekeeper (they've always be nice and sympathetic) but their tech
people always seem to have an attitude... like "why are you bothering me"!!

Thanks another company to avoid... like raymarine refusing to help me
with the older chartplotter on an previous boat.. and standard horizon..

I am here... just bought a boat out of storage and have been removing
piles of rusted anchor chain... it is amazing what brillo pads do after
15yrs...

OK, maybe this will start a discussion: Sunshine came with a PUR 35
(now Katadyn) powered water maker. I'm guessing the watermaker is about 10
years old and I'd like to resurrect it if possible. I know very little about
its history but I did run it a couple of times as a test while we were on the
boat. The pump pumps and water comes out, but the pump leaks a little (I think
new seals should fix that) and the water tasted OK to me but it tested off the
scale. Our little Walmart water tester showed 999 parts per million and
blinking, so my co-captain is not happy with the output.

My PO told me that he had used the watermaker but I don't know much
about how -- or whether - he maintained it. I'm hoping that the membrane is
still usable because, if it isn't, I'll probably not spend the money on a new
one.

I took the watermaker off the boat and brought it home, thinking I
would replace the seals and see about the membrane. I then discovered that it
is a 24 volt model and had been installed on a 12 volt boat. Don't ask me why.

I called Katadyn and tried to talk to a tech person but was told by a
rather snippy woman that they were too busy fixing things to take phone calls
and that she would have to relay any questions I have to them and she would
call me back with the answer -- kind of like talking to a doctor through a
nurse. I asked her to relay several questions but the only one that she saw
fit to answer was the one about the voltage mis-match. She told me that the
tech told her that the pump would run, which I already knew, but that the motor
would wear out a lot sooner and that it may already be on its last legs. This
made me even less excited about investing in a new membrane.

My question, FINALLY: Is there a cheap and simple gadget that I can
install in order to convert the 12 volts going to the pump into the 24 volts
that his watermaker seems to want -- maybe some sort of transformer?

Also, if anyone knows of a way to test the membrane to see it it's
usable, that you be very helpful as well. That was one of my other questions
that the snippy woman at Katadyn saw fit to ignore.

Many thanks for any help you can provide.
