Craig I've used the Garmin eTrex handheld. It interfaces nicely with the computer for using the Garmin topo maps. Makes it possible to plan routes and load them onto the handheld and download routes from the handheld to the computer. It is also possible to interface the GPS with a laptop to get real time position info on NOAA marine charts. For backpacking, any of the Garmin units would probably suffice. Likewise, any of them would be acceptable interfaced with a computer and NOAA charts. However, for standalone marine use, the Garmin GPS Map76 and its sister with the color screen is probably better since it has coastal waters aids to navigation built-in. I used the GPS Map76 along with paper charts for my first Bahamas cruise.

I'd be interested in your opinions of the various models and manufacturers currently available. I would like for it to interface to other devices easily, and to a PC. Any advice? TIA!
