I use the round one. Have replaced the burner w/a standard unit from Home depot - knocked the remains of the old one off the mounting plate, dismantled the new one to just the burner and tacked that onto the mounting plate; w/luck might last another 10 years.
By itself it's always blown out real easy. I've had luck with a wind break, a cylindrical piece of sheet metal (think I used a piece of 16" (diameter) sheet metal flu from HD. Hang the wind break from the edge of the bbq so it hangs _below_ the bbq. It needs to be a little smaller around (circumference) than the bbq so there's a slot left up one side for the gas pipe; I guess you could customize and tailor a better fit but I never did. Looks kinda like a barrel with the grill at the top and you need some space under the bbq. But 12-16" length helped a lot; adjust/modify to suit and maybe you could get by w/only 8" hanging down...
