Since I initially asked the question... If you decide not to turn it on 
at all. Especially at the beginning of the trip or for a bit every hour 
or so, Are you not a hazard to navigation yourself? As well as not 
knowing what is going on. ie... If they had monitored the VHF for a bit 
the following morning, resources would not have been launched maybe?

And FYI, I am sick and tired of the diatribe I am sailing and therefore 
do not have to have my radio on due to the powerboaters talking. Maybe 
the powerboater is trying to reach you?
