I have an old MD 17 C. Yesterday on the way down the Miami river with an
outgoing current of 6knts it refused to go into forward. I almost went
aground and hit a cement pier.

Last year my wife took the transmission out as it was slipping in forward
gear, instead of rebuilding the asbestos pads on the cone itself, (on the
advice of a Cuban mechanic :-)) she had a brass sleeve installed on the
inside wall instead, where the asbestos pads would touch. Now the brass has
apparently worn down so the shifter cannot push the cone all the way in to
engage the walls.

A new transmission is 6000USD a rebuild the same way 600USD new pads 1400USD
sounds steep .

I thought of using my dremel and taking an 1/8 inch of the little shifter so
it can engage better. It is only a temp fix. Any ideas

Regards John
