Muriatic acid will cut through severe tarnish and 
heavily accumulated crud on brass instantly on 
contact without damaging the brass. Wash the 
part(s) thoroughly with water to neutralize and 
remove the acid. It (the acid) will leave the 
brass a funny pink color, but your favorite metal 
polish (Brasso, Flitz, etc) and the usual amount 
of elbow grease will take that right off.

Be really careful with the muriatic acid, though, 
as it´s strong stuff; incidental drips, splashes, 
etc., can permanently mark various other 
surfaces.  I haven´t had any problems with it 
touching my skin for a while, but a person with 
very fair skin might have some reaction.
