Steve:
I am not plugged in. There is no power to the boat except when I hook up the
generator. I haul at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard which, although extremely
economical, is also pretty bare bones -- no power or water in the storage yard.
So I have to bring my portable generator with me when I go to check on the
boat during the winter. I simple drop an extension cord to the ground from the
30 amp inlet on deck and leave it there over the winter; I can simply plug the
cord into the generator without disturbing the winter cover if I don't want to
go aboard. I can usually tell from the load on the generator whether or not
the on-board smart charger is drawing lots of amps or if the battery bank is
pretty well charged. The Honda EU-2000 has an "eco" mode which reduces the
generator power when it's not seeing a large amp draw. The main battery switch
on the boat remains off unless I am aboard.

Alan, on one hand you say don’t trickle charge but top off with the
generator, but if you’re plugged in (as I am) and the inverter is left on,
aren’t they getting a trickle charge anyway?
