I'm running Ubuntu and you certainly can compile this program when the bugs get shaken out. If you are new to compiling software you might want to start with the last stable version, it will be easier to get going. Look in /usr/lib for your *la files, there's lots of 'em! I have the same glib files installed as you so that isn't the problem.
