Thanks much for the help. I do have a lib_dir that points to /usr/lib in my 
~/.lives file, and having uninstalled and subsequently rebuilt the LiVES source 
from svn, I do see that a directory was created called /usr/lib/lives, which 
contains the plugins directory, including encoders/ and decoders/. I also 
notice 
the line of output you mentioned from ./configure:

Checking for avformat_close_input.....yes

But the same audio read and av_close_input_file symbol lookup errors still 
occur. I'm running on a 64-bit system with 8 processor cores in case that makes 
a difference.
