Hi Kyle,
no ideas I am afraid. I am able to open .mkv files here with no problems,
both instant open and frame-by-frame open.

One thing I am not able to reproduce is opening to png, since ubuntu 14.04
(the only system I have to test with right now) has broken mplayer which
cannot decode to png/alpha. Can you try this: go into Prefences / Decoding
and set the image type to jpeg, then try opening the file again. Let me
know if it fixes the problem or if it still happens.
