I changed the subject as not to hijack the thread, hope that's okay.

LMMS is in dire need of a name change, as loath as many people are to do
so. I'm fine with most OSS's obscure names (GIMP, GNOME, K3b, etc.), but
I agree with Stéphane's points completely and think this should be a
rare exception. While it sounds unlikely due to its seeming
superficiality at first look, I think that in the long term a GOOD name
change will help LMMS's popularity.

Something clean, common and easy to remember and pronounce in any
language would be good. I'd also handle the transition the same way that
Azureus did with Vuze. "Vuze, formerly known as Azureus" in the splash
screen. In the repositories "azureus" became a metapackage that pulled
in the "vuze" package. The logo stayed the same (blue poison dart frog).
Banks and such undergoing acquisition by other banks use similar
strategies to consolidate their brand over six months to a year.

My suggestion is "Siren". That's nine syllables shorter that "Linux
Multimedia Studio" and two shorter than LMMS. It's one word and
phonetically simple for both western and eastern languages (sai ren or
see rain). Is LMMS not a dangerous creature that lures you in with
enchanting music and voices?

I found one obscure app using the name:

http://www.scarabee-software.net/en/download.html

Sonic Foundry, now owned by Sony, had an app called Siren but I don't
think it's maintained any longer. So it looks like it's pretty much up
for grabs without having checked every nation's trademark database.

What does everyone think?
