Some many months ago when I was discussing stereo panning and strips in general with Paul and folks on LAD, he said Ardour uses several different 'plugins' for the actual pan and volume sections of Ardour's strips. The idea was "the right plugin for the right job": If it is a stereo strip you need a slightly different configuration of 'panning' and 'volume' controls than with a mono strip. So I had an idea similar to yours, that we embed a plugin, with our own *.ui file, into the strip section basically from the top of the volume slider all the way down to the bottom of the pan knob. Different 'plugins' are placed there according to exactly what the user wants there. For stereo strips we could have a choice of: A volume slider and a two panners. A volume slider and a panner and a 'blend' control. Simply four volume sliders - no panner. And so on... For example there is a ready-made plugin from Invada (I think) - the stereo front-end strip plugin. It's got blend controls. I actually currently use this plugin as a rack plugin. So you can see, it would be nice if such features were actually embedded in the strip itself. Again, I think there were some conceptual and implementation issues, but I was certain it could be made to work.
