Personally I feel that their liability outweighs their usefulness.

They are useful in that an experienced admin is more likely to know that they 
exist and testing for it can fall in that category of questions where "we put 
1 or 2 of them in so that people aiming for 100% are really going to have to 
work for it but not knowing it is never going to make you fail".

The downsides are many though. It re-introduces the idea of nit-picky 
questions that LPI is trying to remove - the "what obscure option in command X 
invokes function Y" type of question.

I'd hate to try write an item for that :-) Imagine this:

On Mandrake, and only on Mandrake, what is the file you edit to add you own 
customized repos for the package manager?

Yuck.

And where do we draw the line? If SuSEs kernel build config quirks are 
allowed, can I submit items about emerge? :-)

So I would have to vote for blanket excluding distro-specific stuff to avoid a 
can of worms.
