I would say that understanding LDAP is definitely useful for understanding security. As someone else already mentioned, LDAP directories are used to store sensitive information that must be safeguarded. Understanding how to set up LDAP security also involves PAM and Access Control Lists. How would you put these topics into a security course if the students don't first how to implement them in LDAP?
