Well, there is rather significant difference: Linux almost never comes pre-installed on OEM hardware and the vast majority of new Linux users - whether hobbyists or budding admin - will have to install Linux one way or the other if they want to use it. I understand not wanting to scare users away, but perhaps at least telling them how to use a live USB would be helpful. Of course, that doesn't have to be part of a curriculum.
