I am a printcap novice, but the office where I had a jetdirect we just
determined it's ip then set it as a remote UNIX printer...

Have you tried lprngtool? Just select unix printer, enter the hostname,
select the right filter and choose client only (humm, my printcap says
server, must be because I'm a novice)

lprngtool could generate your printcap and *cfg files that you place on
other hosts...

The printcap would prob look something like this

##LPRNGTOOL## REMOTE lj4dith 300x300 letter {} LaserJet4dither Default 1
lp0
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp0
:sh
:ml=0
:mx=0
:af=/var/spool/lpd/lp0/acct
:lf=/var/spool/lpd/lp0/log
:cd=/var/spool/lpd/lp0
:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
:if=/usr/lib/rhs/rhs-printfilters/master-filter
:server
:

Humm, I think you'd have to install lprng on the clients, is that what
you are trying to avoid? I think you need some form of lpd at each node,
ie lprng and Jetdirect firmware, to handle the connections.
