I am using KDE, although having never had any success with artsd, I
linked aplay to play and used normal OSS sound drivers on my server
before I got ltspsound working.

I am using a kernel I built myself as I also patched my system to allow
NFS Swaping. Therefore the ltsp_kmods did not work (incorrect kernel
version) so I make modules and installed them where the kmods package
put them, which then made it work.

I would doubt you would get gnome sound working without implementing esd
support. Once you have regular support getting esd support alongside is
also possible. Get the main sound support working first.

Where do you have esound installed? You must enable sound module
support to get sound working on your diskless workstation. You won't
get esound working until you get sound working with the kmods support.

I don't know of any document anywhere. I think I will writeup how I got
it working and post it, although I'm not very good at writing. I do
have nasd and esd working on the same workstation though.
