Let me simplify:

Whenever your server is not properly shutdown - due power failure or simply pushing
the poweroff - there is a great potential for data loss. Your files could be so
corrupted that even fsck may NOT be able to recover your damage files. So never
assume that fsck will fix everything. Even a journaling filesystem does guarantee
data corruption or even data loss.

If the data on your server is important to you then your best defense against power
failures/outages is an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) box. A good UPS system alerts
the server whenever it detects loss of power. This gives the server a chance to warn
connected users and to initiate a clean shutdown. Normally a well charged UPS should
provide 5-15 minutes of power to your server. This is usually enough time for most
servers to perform a 'clean' shutdown. A clean shutdown means little or no chance
data loss or corruption. Plus fsck will not run on subsequent reboots.

Again, if your data is important to you DO NOT rely on fsck as your first line of
defense in case of power failure. Otherwise, you will be disappointed.
