I think I've solved that particular problem by doing an install of SuSE
7.3 after reformatting the partition. That has finally rid me of the
fragmented packet problem which has plagued me from the time of 1st
installing LTSP on my box. I had indeed suspected a library / system
compatibility problem from the start, but was advised by someone that
segfaults are usually caused by hardware.

My next (and hopefully final) hurdle is to figure out how to feed an
XF86Config file to the DC rather than having it build one on the fly, as
it's failing to fully init the Trident Blade3D grfx card. It works
flawlessly when I boo the box from a SuSE 7.3 Live CD, so I know it's
possible. I've installed XF86 ver 4, as I've never had success using
3.3.6 with a Blade3D in the past. I will be RTFM'ing this a.m.
