I also observe this behaviour.

I have a 512Meg server, two 8 port switches daisy-chained,
8 identical client computers - with identical rtl8139 cards
with boot ROMs, 100Mbit all round.

DHCP comes from another small server, tftp comes from
the big one.

Usually, everything is fine.

But under some circumstances, usually including plenty of
people using the computers, I get the slow boot.

It does not seem to be workstation-specific.

They stream steadily and slowly.

No, they scroll slowly - sometimes as much as 20 secs between
lines saying "Mounting /proc".

It seems to all accounts like it is running at a very slow link speed,
as everything completes.

After the xdm login, all seems to be quick again.

No, I have reverse DNS setup.
