  Try vmstat to help you understand what is creating the load. In general if it isn't 
a process eating up CPU time then it is a blocking disk read/write. Very slow disk 
reads/writes, particularly when they appear suddenly on a system that has been working
fine, can be an indication of a looming hardware failure.

  Also, have you eliminated NFS as your problem? When the problem has occurred have 
you tried going to the server and creating a file directory? If you can do it on the 
server, but not via an NFS mount I'd suspect a network/NFS problem.
