Is there a size limit to posts ? My earlier reply to this did not appear at all ! It
was maybe a little too detailed ? Or it landed only in Derek Dresser's inbox and he
decided it was too much ?
I did get over the xdm problem by adding
x:5:respawn:etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon to the /etc/inittab file in that specific
instance. In other installations I think the other display managers manage it. I also
notice that there is a service called 'dm' running in Mandrake 9.And there is no
x:5:respawn:etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon in the /etc/inittab file. If it is there from an
upgrade from a earlier version then it is commented out.
The problem I am facing is that if there is a change in the client side video hardware
then X may not work. If the monitor changes I have trouble. I have one installation
running a Mandrake 9 & LTSP install where client video graphics controller is a VIATEC
VT8361/VT8601 and monitor a Samsung/Samtron 55v. In another I have the same excepting
that the monitor is Samsung/Samtron 45Bn. This change results in some video problem.
Monitor just blinks (power and signal indicator). I am able to connect in
non-graphical mode though.
Is it necessary to have identical node video hardware config for X to work
consistently ? With different video hardware am I likely to run into trouble ?

What is the error message?

Also this script seems to

you can check to see if xdm is running with

ps waux | grep xdm

that will search through the list of processes and see if xdm is there.
