Before we can talk about hardware, you really need to tell
us more about the software.

What applications will the "average" users be using ?

Will they settle for a lightweight window manager like Icewm ?

One thing I can tell you is that we deployed a server that now
has 140 thin clients on it.

The server is a dual P3-650Mhz with 1gb of ram.
The machine is now in desparate need of an upgrade, in fact,
a new machine has been ordered to replace it.
It ran fine upto about 110 clients.

We were able to get so many clients connected, because we chose
IceWM as the window manager, and most users are just using
an xterm session to telnet into another server to enter transactions
into a database.  This may be similar to your call center application.

About half of those users are allow to run Mozilla and StarOffice, but
they don't spend all day in those apps.
