I would download the same version of the kernel that ltsp uses, talk to Jim McQuillan and try to obtain the config file that he used to compile with. You may also need to apply one or more patches (Swap over NFS). Yes you will need to use the initrd kit. I used it once, but if you follow the documentation, it is easy to use, The other option is to download prior versions of the ltsp kernel. One of those may work fine.
