Righto. Why then does the ldm script try to execute /etc/X11/Xsession
which I thought was just a configuration file for an executable like
startx? Doing my best to drag myself out of a constant state of
newbiness.:-)

Yup, but it updates the ssh_known_hosts file with a seperate line for
the hostname of the server and the ip of the server as I described in a
previous email in this thread. This throws up an error in the ldm.log
which disappears when I change it to both the hostname and the ip on one
line for a particular key.

Yes, Gnome Desktop Environment installed with the initial install of the
Debian OS.
