I share your concern about performance issues on older hardware.
The fact that you are running a cpu at 500MHz indicates it's not an i386 so
you should be fine at least for a while.
Going forward, as long as the CPU is supported by the linux kernel, there
shouldn't be a problem.
I suspect that Debian will continue supporting whatever cpu the Linux
kernel supports.
Although, the direction of the applications is becoming a problem. They
are requiring increasing amounts of Ram and cpu cycles.
Fortunately, with lightweight desktop environments like Xfce it shouldn't
be too much of a problem for quite a long time.
